WAVES 2033 outlines a new vision for Western Australia ‘to be recognised as a world-class destination that immerses people in its unique cultures, communities and environment’ and sets an ambitious goal to grow visitor spend in the state to $25 billion per annum by 2033.
Tourism is one of eight priority sectors the Western Australian Government is focused on growing to diversify the WA economy, secure local jobs and attract investment. Learn more about this goal in Diversify WA, Western Australia’s economic development framework.
Tourism WA works closely with other government agencies and industry bodies to promote Western Australia as a destination and support West Australian tourism operators. We also provide funding to other organisations to carry out marketing and advocacy work on behalf of our agency.
In WA, tourism matters. It represents the sixth largest sector in terms of economic contribution, and is a vital employer, supporting nearly 31,000 small businesses and over 100,000 jobs. In April 2024, Tourism Research Australia released the State Tourism Satellite Accounts 2022-23, which provides the latest data on tourism's contribution to WA's economy.
This report also outlines the economic contribution of tourism to each state and territory, in relation to Gross State Product, Gross Value Added and tourism filled jobs.

In July 2024, Tourism Research Australia released the 2022-23 Regional Tourism Satellite Account, which provides the latest data on tourism's contribution to WA's five tourism regions, as well as other tourism regions in Australia.

Each year, Tourism Research Australia publishes a summary of the number of tourism businesses in Australia. Based on ABS figures, the June 2023 report found there were around 30,800 tourism businesses in Western Australia alone.
