The 2022 Margaret River Pro could make or break the season for the world’s top professional surfers after the World Surf League (WSL) scheduled the event as mid-season decider on the 2022 Championship Tour Schedule announced today.

The Margaret River Pro, which is sponsored by Tourism WA, will be held from April 24 to May 4 next year and is one of only two Australian events on the 10-event global tour, with Margaret River scheduled as the fifth stop.

After the Margaret River Pro, the field of competitors will be reduced, leaving only the top performers (22 men and 10 women) to compete for the world titles in the final five events. They’ll be joined by four wildcard competitors (two men and two women).

The competitors who survive the mid-season cut will also automatically qualify for the start of the 2023 World Championship Tour.

Tourism WA Acting Managing Director, Derryn Belford said the scheduling of the Pro, added prestige and excitement to the event:

“The decision by the WSL to make the Margaret River Pro a mid-season decider, makes it stand out amongst the other global tour stops as a critical performance stage for competitors,” she said.

“It’s a real vote of confidence in the great waves Margaret River delivers and the long-term relationship we have built with the WSL to keep this event and its economic benefits in WA.”
