The World Surf League’s Championship Tour is heading to Rottnest Island after ten days of huge waves at the Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro.
The 11-day Rip Curl Rottnest Search kicks off on May 16 in Strickland Bay, marking the first time two World Surf League Championship Tour events have been held in WA in the same year.
The event follows the world-famous Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro, which has been a World Championship Tour event since 2014, and attracts the world’s top professional surfers.
The events showcase Western Australia as a leading surf and adventure travel destination, with the popular surfing spots broadcast to millions worldwide.
Tourism Western Australia Acting Managing Director Derryn Belford said the two events create valuable global media promotion of the tourism destinations.
“We have already seen stellar waves at Margaret River over the past few weeks, and we are hoping for favourable conditions at Rottnest.
“But it’s not just the athletes and waves viewers will see when they tune in, the events also provide excellent promotion of the destinations as appealing tourism spots.
“With Rottnest’s white-sand beaches, secluded coves, and adorable quokkas, there’s a lot to explore when the time is right.
“The Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro has already captured the hearts and minds of this audience the world over with its waves, wines and magnificent forests. It’s now Rottnest Island’s time to shine and open viewers’ eyes further to the adventures that await them here.”
Although Rottnest Island will remain open for visitors while hosting the event, spectators will not be able to access the event site at Strickland Bay because it is a broadcast only event.
