Three popular Perth beaches will be a sea of red and yellow as more than 5,000 surf lifesavers from around Australia descend on WA for the 2022 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships (the Aussies).

The nine-day event, taking place from April 2 to 10 next year, is expected to attract upwards of 8,000 competitors, visitors, spectators and support crew to WA and will include events at Scarborough, Trigg and Secret Harbour beaches.

The event injected around $15.8 million into the WA economy when it came to our shores in 2018 – attracting more than 8,500 interstate and international visitors, who stayed the equivalent of close to 69,000 nights.

Tourism WA acting managing director Derryn Belford welcomed the return of the championships.

“As well as the direct injection to the local economy, this event will also promote our great beaches and what we have to offer here in WA, through social media activity and the media coverage of the championships,” Derryn said.

“Out-of-state visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the Scarborough foreshore and its many restaurants and cafes, grassy picnic areas and playgrounds, as well as a buzzing nightlife.”

The Aussies consists of more than 480 beach and ocean events and brings together members from 315 Australian Surf Clubs.

The 2022 championships’ main events will be held at Scarborough Beach, with beach sprints and relays at Trigg and board riding at Secret Harbour.

Outside of the competition, the event will have plenty of fun for all ages with the inclusion of the Aussies festival zone in Scarborough, with food trucks, swim wear retailers and family activities.
